Overview

North East Region consists of Eight States viz. Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Nagaland, Mizoram, Tripura, Meghalaya & Sikkim. High mountain ranges, dense forests, giant rivers and beautiful lakes makes it a literal heaven in India. Thousands of species of flowers, fruits, rare plants, animals and birds adds to its beauty. The region is also endowed with immense wealth of natural resources like mineral oil, gas, uranium, coal and rich hydroelectric potential. This is the reason why it is known as ‘Ashta Lakshmi’.
More than 200 tribes living in the region have different attires, dances, songs, music, art, cuisines etc. Yet they share legacy with the Indian culture that dates back to Ancient period. They are inseparable with national ethos through the stories from Ramayana and Mahabharata. Brave martyrdom of freedom fighters like Rani Ma Gaidinliu and several others marks its unquestionable national spirit.
This area suffers from serious problems like Bangladeshi Infiltration, threat of expansionist China, illegal trade of weapons sponsored by foreign forces and trafficking of narcotics ruining the people particularly youth. The negligence had led to insecurity, unemployment and existential crisis amongst locals forcing many of them to move to other parts of the country. Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s Government was the first union government to address the issues of education, employment, health, transport and communication in this region. Present Modi Government, while continuing Vajpayee’s legacy, has not just focused on an all round development of the region but also brought it in the national discourse on priority basis.
